Most cities tell you how tall a fence can be and leave it at that. Allen goes further. The city requires metal posts and metal hardware on every fence, set in concrete.
That is unusual. It is also exactly what we build.
What Goes Underground in Allen
Our posts go 3 feet down, which is well past the city minimum. The difference shows up in clay that swells and shrinks through the seasons. A post set to a shallow depth lives entirely in the layer that moves.

- Spaced 6 feet apart instead of the 8 feet most crews use. Shorter spans hold up better against Allen's spring wind.
- A kicker board runs along the base, keeping the boards off the ground so the wood never sits in damp dirt.
The New Build
What goes back up is our standard: 8 feet of pre-stained cedar, boards overlapping board on board, finished with a top cap. Allen allows 8 feet in back and side yards, so that is what goes up on most jobs here. Go shorter if you want. The posts and framing underneath stay the same.
Replacing Before Failure
When a whole street comes due at once, the calendar fills fast. It fills fastest right after a spring storm. Getting on the schedule early is the whole advantage.
Allen has 351 registered associations, and the city tells applicants in capital letters to check the HOA before applying for a permit. Start with the association, then come to us, then the city. That order saves you from doubling back.
A lot of Allen lots have alleys behind them, which changes where material stages and how the crew reaches the back. We sort that out on the walk through, not the morning of demo. Allen is 7 road miles from our shop in north Plano, so the crew is close.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a fence across my front yard in Allen?
No. Allen effectively prohibits fences in front yards. The only thing the code allows forward of the house is a sub 36 inch element attached to an unenclosed porch or patio. People who moved from Plano are sometimes surprised by this, because Plano allows a 40 inch open fence in front.
My lot backs up to Cottonwood Creek. Does that change the build?
It can. Creek backed lots often slope toward the water, and Allen caps a combined retaining wall plus fence at 12 feet total, with the fence portion still at 8 feet max. No fence is allowed inside a floodplain at all. We check the grade and any easement lines on the walk through.
Allen's code says metal posts. Is that what you use?
Yes, and we always have. Allen requires metal posts, metal caps, and metal hardware on every fence. Our posts are galvanized steel at 3 feet deep, twice the depth Allen's code calls for. The city and our build happen to want the same thing.
Does the HOA or the city approve my fence first?
The HOA. Allen tells homeowners directly to start with their association before applying for the city permit. With 351 registered associations in Allen, most lots are covered. Check yours first and it keeps the process from doubling back.
My lot has an alley behind it. Does that affect the job?
It helps. Alleys let the crew stage material behind the house instead of carrying everything through a side gate. We figure out access on the walk through so demo morning runs without surprises.
What does your warranty cover?
All of our work, for 3 years, on labor. That applies to the entire fence, every post and every board. We carry insurance too, so the crew in your yard is covered the whole time they are there.
