Iron Fences and Inspections
An iron fence around a pool gets inspected. So we build to the pool safety rules Plano actually enforces. You’ll hear what the inspector checks before we dig a hole. First we figure out what your yard is: a pool barrier, a front yard fence, or an open run. Each one is held to different rules. Iron shows every bit of post movement, so depth matters here.

Where Iron Works Best
Most of the work falls into a handful of jobs.

Side and back yard iron runs. For homeowners who want a fence that won’t rot, warp, or need staining.
Iron hides nothing. If you want the yard blocked off, a privacy fence is the build that does it. Wood makes up most of the other fences we build.
Pool Fence Requirements
A fence around a pool has its own safety rules on top of the normal fence rules. The City of Plano sets them in its pool and spa permit requirements, and they are all about keeping a small child out of the water.
- The barrier has to be tall enough that no one can climb over it. The height is measured from the yard side, away from the pool.
- The bottom of the fence sits close to the ground. No gap wide enough to squeeze underneath.
- The gaps between pickets have to be narrow enough that no one can fit through them.
- Nothing on the fence can work as a foothold. Where the horizontal rails could be used as steps, they move to the pool side and the picket gaps get tighter.
- The gate swings outward, away from the pool. It has to close and latch on its own. The latch has to sit out of a small child’s reach, and there cannot be a hole near it big enough to reach through.
- The ground just outside the barrier stays clear. Nothing climbable belongs there, pool equipment included.
A fence around a home pool needs its own separate permit. The state pool enclosure law covers multifamily and HOA pools, not single family homes; your backyard pool barrier is governed by the City of Plano’s adopted pool code. Rules change over time, so confirm the current requirements with Plano Building Inspections before anyone starts building.
Pool Gate Requirements
A run of panels is easy to get right. The gate is not. It carries several separate ways to fail an inspection: swing direction, self-closing, self-latching, latch placement, and nothing nearby to grab. We build the gate to every one of those requirements.
Front Yard Iron Fences
Yes. Iron is one of the few materials that clears the front yard rule without a fight. Most homeowners are surprised the rule exists at all.
In Plano, a fence across the front yard has to stay low and open enough to see through. A solid board fence blocks the view completely, so it isn’t an option out there. Ornamental iron pickets clear both rules easily.
The front yard height limit is low. A short panel fits under it comfortably, a full height panel doesn’t. We tell you which one your yard can take before you pick a style.
Richardson and Parker write their own fence rules, and their rules aren’t Plano’s. We check the city’s requirements before we quote anything.
Lifespan and Maintenance
A steel fence that’s coated properly can last for decades. What ends one early is almost always rust that started at a chip nobody fixed. Iron doesn’t rot, warp, or need staining. It’s low maintenance, not no maintenance.
The upkeep splits two ways:
- Touching up a chip or a scratch the week it happens is yours. Wire brush, prime, paint. It matters more than anything else you’ll do for the fence.
- Rinsing sprinkler mineral deposit or pool splash off the pickets is yours. Moving a sprinkler head so it stops hitting the same spot every morning costs nothing.
- Anything that goes in the ground is ours.
Questions to Ask Your Contractor
Two quotes for an iron fence are often not for the same fence. These questions show you which is which.
- What is the metal, and what is the wall thickness on the pickets, rails, and posts?
- What is the metal coated with, and what keeps it from rusting?
- How deep do the posts go, and what are the posts made of?
- Are you pulling the permit, or am I? If this is a pool fence, are you pulling the separate pool permit?
- Is the quote by the linear foot?
- Is demo and haul off of the old fence included?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
- Iron is sold by the linear foot. Get every quote in the same unit before you put them side by side.

How an Iron Fence Install Runs
- Walk the yard. We look at the grade, the pool, and what the city will require, all before we quote anything.
- Quote and permit. You get the estimate, along with which permits your job needs.
- Locates and scheduling. We text you when the utility line locates are called.
- Demo and posts on day one. We tear out the old fence, haul it off, and start setting posts the same day.
- Panels, gate, and inspection. Panels go up. The gate is hung and set to close and latch on its own. We haul off every bit of debris, then meet the inspector.
