Can I put a privacy fence across my front yard in Allen?
No. Allen does not allow a fence across a front yard. The only thing permitted forward of the house is a sub 36 inch element attached to an unenclosed porch or patio. Privacy here gets built from the front corners of the house backward, which is where it does the work anyway.
Our lot backs up to a greenbelt trail. Will 8 feet actually block the view?
In most yards, yes, and we will tell you if yours is the exception. If the trail sits higher than your lawn, the useful height changes. We measure that standing on your patio before you order anything.
Does Allen's code require a specific kind of post?
Yes. Allen requires metal posts, metal caps, and metal hardware on every fence regardless of the face material. Our posts go 3 feet down in galvanized steel, twice the depth Allen's ordinance calls for. The city and our build line up on that.
My yard slopes down to Cottonwood Creek. Does that change how you build?
It does. A slope changes the effective height and can open gaps at the bottom. Allen also caps a combined retaining wall plus fence at 12 feet total, with the fence portion at 8 feet max. We check the grade and any floodplain or easement lines on the walk through. Allen prohibits fencing inside a floodplain entirely.
Does the HOA approve this before the city does?
Yes, and Allen tells homeowners that directly. Take your fence plan to the association first, then to the city. With 351 registered associations in Allen, most lots have one. Doing it in the right order keeps you from approving the same fence twice.
My side yard is narrow. Can you still build 8 feet there?
Usually. Eight feet is allowed in side yards. What we check is access. A narrow side run changes how material gets to the back and where the crew can work. We sort that out on the walk through.
