A post set shallow in this clay will start leaning inside a few years. The clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and a short footing rides that cycle until the run tilts. McKinney allows rear fences up to 8 feet 6 inches, which is the tallest in the area. A taller fence catches more wind, so the post work matters even more at that height.
Posts go 3 feet into the ground, deep enough to sit below the moisture line where the clay stops moving.

Spaced at 6 feet rather than the 8 most crews default to. That tighter interval keeps one shifting post from racking the whole run past the city's threshold.

What goes back up is 8 feet of pre-stained cedar, boards overlapping board on board, capped along the top. Across most of McKinney that is what we put in.

My address is near the downtown square. What changes about the fence?
Fences in McKinney's historic overlay district are held lower than the rest of the city. A new fence also needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before it goes up. That approval has no fee, but it adds calendar time, so we check your address against the district before we quote. Our 8 foot build is not available inside those boundaries, and we tell you that on the first call.
McKinney code enforcement cited my old fence. What are they measuring?
Two things. Lean past 10 degrees, and more than 5 percent of slats missing or broken. Both trigger a notice. A leaning fence is usually a post problem, not a board problem, and that is what we check first when we walk the run.
My house is in Stonebridge Ranch. Does that add a step?
It does. Stonebridge layers its own design review on top of each village association's guidelines, and the most restrictive one governs. Bring both sets to the estimate. Height, color, and which way the finished side faces are what they check.
I moved here from out of state. What should I know about fencing in this climate?
Cedar is the only wood we build in, because pressure treated pine warps and splits through a Texas summer. The clay here also moves with the wet and dry cycle, which is why our posts go 3 feet down in galvanized steel. Most of what fails in a North Texas fence fails underground, where you never see it happening.
McKinney allows 8 foot 6 inch rear fences. Can I build that tall?
The city does allow it on rear and interior side yard lines across most of McKinney. Your HOA can hold you to something lower, and the historic district has its own, shorter limit. We build 8 foot as our standard. If you want the extra 6 inches the city allows, we can do that too.
What happens to my old fence?
